What is OSA?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a potentially life threating disease in which patients stop breathing repeatedly during sleep due to airway collapse, leading to a loss of oxygen and disruptive sleep pattern.
When healthy sleep is interrupted, the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other serious health conditions occurs.
Recently as per community study has done related to OSA, it is found that OSA afflicts more than 50 million adult’s men and women in India.
Sleep apnoea can be of following types:
- Mild (5 to 15 breathing stoppages per hour)
- Moderate (15 to 30 breathing stoppages per hour)
- Severe (over 30 stoppages per hour)
- Poor concentration
- High blood pressure
- Falling asleep during daytime
- Abnormal daytime sleepiness or tiredness
- Abnormal breathing while asleep noted by family
How is OSA diagnosed?
When you feel like this discuss sleep complaints and symptoms with your doctor. If a sleep disorder is suspected, your doctor will refer you for the sleep study for further evaluation.
An overnight diagnostic sleep study knows as a Polysomnogram, or PSG is used to determine the type and severity of the sleep disorder, as well as appropriate treatment.
